Based on "The Work" by Byron Katie, "Immunity to Change" by Robert Kegan, "A Brief History of Everything" by Ken Wilber, and "Power Vs Force" by Dr. David Hawkins
When people come into my office, they usually have some complaint relating to pain. Most of these complaints are easily dealt with. However, there is another type of pain, emotional, or mental pain, which is not as easily dealt with, especially in today's society. There are a couple of reasons for this:
1. Mental pain has a negative stigma put on it by society. I've noticed that there is a lot of judgment involved in stress.
2. Our perceived "problems" are really just problems because we perceive them this way. Then, we try to solve them with the same logic that created them. As Einstein said "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."
3. Simply put, we always seem to argue with reality. If we accept what is, and work with what we have, instead of trying to change the past, or worry about the future, we would all find ourselves in an extremely peaceful state.
Knowing these three impediments, how do we transcend them to reach happiness? I mean, I could say, just accept what is; don't think about the past or the future, but who does that? How do you do that? It seems ludicrous to tell someone that, and then expect them to do it, doesn't it? But what if there was a way, a step by step process by which you could teach your self to become more solution-minded, instead of ruminating on the negative, and more accepting, rather than judgmental? What if you could truly accept yourself, and all your shortcomings? Where would your problems go? That's what I wanted to do with this class; give you the materials to do this yourself.
I find the easiest way to achieve these goals is to do an exercise called "The Work", devised by Byron Katie. I, myself have been doing "The Work" for about a year now, and the results have been amazing. It helps me to recontextualize my whole life in a more accepting, loving manner, which automatically results in more peace.
July 13th we started offering weekly workshops from 7-8:30, to teach others how to do "The Work", so that they will then have the tools to manage their own stress. Also we will be offering a once per month Saturday workshop from 12-5 pm.
I encourage all who want a more peaceful, fulfilling life to attend theses classes. Give Laura a call at 392-6606 for details.
